Plant Verification and GPS
Excellence in Communications Engineering
Plant verification is the process of physically inventorying network elements. This process is often used when a company has purchased a telephone exchange or other network facilities that lack adequate plant records, or when a company has let their own plant records fall into disrepair. Verification can be as basic as evaluating the condition of pedestals, handholes, and poles, or can be a thorough, in-depth review of cable sizes, counts, condition, pole attachments, central office and remote cabinet inventory, and customer premise equipment.
Plant verification can also include pinpointing exact locations of network elements by using GPS technology. This enables plant records to be integrated with other geo spatial elements such as landbase and utility information from local city and county governments, as well as State and Federal GIS information. The availability of GPS coordinate information can also assist with locating network facilities during adverse weather conditions or at night.
Mid-State has been actively using GPS since 1995, and we regularly upgrade our equipment to take advantage of the latest advances in technology. We have performed plant verification and GPS data collection throughout the United States and its territiories. In addition to plant verification, our GPS crews are actively involved in acquiring data for right-of-way permits, and for as-built documentation of newly placed facilities.
